What German Culinary Ingredients Are There?

By Katie Onson

If you have been spending time learning about the culinary arts, chances are that German cooking has been brought to your attention. While it may not be your primary focus, depending on your interests, the truth of the matter is that it has a tremendous degree of appeal all the same. What exactly does this mean, you may wonder? For those who are curious to learn as much as possible, here are some of the most favorite ingredients to know about.

Potatoes - There are many typical ingredients in German cooking, but few are as frequently utilized as potatoes. Different styles exist, as far as this ingredient is concerned, and each of them can appeal to a variety of tastes. These styles include - but are not limited to - fried, mashed, and boiled. Wherever your tastes may lie, it's easy to see that potatoes matter, and that you should consider implementing them in situations where their presence is appropriate.

Cabbage - German cooking also entails the presence of cabbage. It's easy to see that this product matters, though there are two main variants to consider: red and white. The former is somewhat sweeter, but this doesn't change the fact that either can be utilized to create the more commonly used sauerkraut. Even though most will think of this as simply a hot dog topping, here are many other uses that chefs, who are proficient at the German culinary arts, can recognize.

Pork - It would be unwise to talk about the German culinary arts without going over the different types of meat to be used. Pork is one of the most common, and it's especially delicious when it's prepared well. Not only is the style of cooking integral, which goes without saying, but one cannot deny the importance of meat served alongside vegetables for a greater culinary experience. This is yet another ingredient that isn't to be overlooked.

As you can see, there are numerous aspects that can be applied to the German culinary arts. Suffice it to say, some of them may stand out more than others, but each of them has a place in your arsenal. Not only do they have unique tastes, from one to the next, but the nutritional value they possess will vary as well. In order to get the most out of said ingredients, though, focus on learning how to cook effectively and apply your knowledge to each endeavor.
