Practice compassion. This could be difficult but you should learn to put yourself to the situation they have. And see what happen. This way, you will be able to experience their own feelings. Everything that comes from your mouth matters a lot. Think of what is best for them and everyone and not for your own sake only.
Never judge. Whatever you hear and discover from that person, you have to understand. No need to give bad comments but reassuring words are needed. They have their reasons and you cannot say they are wrong or they are right. Your job is to be there with the, talk to them, listen but not to condemn them as a person. Because of what they did.
Be resourceful. Do not just rely with what you learn in school and heard from other people. You have to find facts on your own and learn. Have a basis of the things you learn and explain more. This will be your added knowledge and be able to give the help they need.
Display sense of appreciation. Show to them that you really care. So they will be encourage to share all the things you needed to hear from them. And they will find comfort with your presence. It is necessary so they will not be afraid of you. The simple things they did, must be appreciated.
Learn to keep secrets. It is very important and do not lost the trust that your clients give you. All the things they share to you should be keep for the two of you only. And you are not allowed to spread the information.
