Some Examples Of Intelligent Sea Life That Have Been Observed

By George Hall

Humans are considered to be the most intelligent among the animals of the whole world due to them possessing different abilities. They are capable in doing mental activities which other creatures could not though researchers believe there are some that have more intelligence compared to what was believed initially. These are observed usually on the closest cousins that humans have which are the apes.

This information is based on what researchers found in their DNA being similar with humans and their behavior have similarities with people too. Although land animals are not the only ones with this intelligence because there are also intelligent sea life being observed by scientists. Knowing the extent of their capabilities is harder because of their underwater habitat that individuals cannot always visit.

Continuous modern technology development enables the sea creatures to be observed now that were impossible before. They can set up some surveillance devices and cameras to help in recording these creatures and their daily reactions, activities and habits. Others are capable of utilizing tools even like Tusk fishes that crack open the shell using rocks.

Octopus is another examples which is able to mimic others, find its way at a maze, spread cultural information and solve advance problems. Other types also pick coconut halves that are discarded by villagers, carry them and hide underneath while waiting for the prey. Two shells typically are used in letting them see between its small opening through.

Dolphins are another sea creatures considered to have intelligence and are known to wear sponges on their nose when catching fishes in rocks. Doing this helps protect their nose against the rocks when searching and chasing their prey in that environment. Some captive dolphins were tested by painting marks somewhere they cannot see and the animals tried to see the markings in the mirror just like humans do.

Researchers have documented recently also some dolphins helping a fishing expedition happening in a certain place during fall seasons. They heard the schools of fish to the local fishermen who had their nets wading in water and they slap the water to signal the fishermen that fishes are coming. These actions described as an advanced social learning.

Killer whales show their intelligence through cooperating to get the prey such as a seal sleeping on the floating ice. That whale which saw it first then calls the others and form a line with their tails facing the seal and they create waves by beating it down and up. These waves wash over that floating ice and send to the water the seal where they could kill it.

Whales are known now also for their elaborate cultural exchange form and communication aside from their usual intelligence. New mating songs are composed by male Humpback whales each year and the popular ones spread to other parts gradually. This cultural exchange of songs happen many times within ten years of observation.

Knowing that other creatures are intelligent also is fascinating specially when observing them do the activities. This information might help people understand them better so they would care for them. Their environment should be preserved also to avoid them becoming extinct.
